Girls Inc.® of Northern New Jersey will be closing. It is with deep sadness that we received the following email:

October 30, 2006

Dear Girls Inc of NNJ supporter,

Because you have been a great supporter of Girls Inc. of Northern New Jersey, we wanted to advise you that after several months of efforts to re-organize or to identify a successor organization committed to a similar mission, we have unfortunately reached the decision to cease operations and dissolve the organization. Both the Board and the Staff with support from the National organization have explored transition possibilities but none have developed as we hoped.

Sadly, we were unable to retain our staff: Executive Director, Liza McIntyre, and Program Coordinator, Danielle Budka beyond August. As you all know, Liza and Danielle have contributed immeasurably to the development of program services and community awareness. The girls responded to their caring program delivery, special field trips, and thoughtful leadership. And their commitment to see as many girls as possible in programs this fall, despite the circumstances, means that both Montclair and Passaic activities will continue under the leaders in those communities. There is unfortunately no apparent solution for the girls in Morristown.

Our experience has confirmed the early view that the need for services to at-risk girls in Northern New Jersey is profound and it's also clear that girls-only programming is at risk everywhere in a time of funding cutbacks. Since its start-up in 2002, Girls Inc. has served over 500 girls in northern New Jersey, primarily in Morristown and Passaic. Successful programs included Economic Literacy and Operation Smart, as well as mother-daughter workshops on personal space and safety. However, fundraising challenges have continued to impact the future development of the organization in the last 18 months, especially the Asian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, as well as significant local corporate and foundation funding cutbacks.

To the many individuals, corporations and foundations who have helped Girls Inc. to make a difference in the lives of our girls, we express our gratitude for your commitment and your help. If you would like to continue to support the ongoing local program efforts for girls in need, please contact Lynne Mallory (lmallory@optonline.net, or 973-470-7695) in Passaic or the Montclair Counseling Center, (MCC10@juno.com, or (973-783-6977). They will need and greatly appreciate your future financial support.

The Board of Girls Inc. of Northern New Jersey would like to thank all the girls associated with our programs for sharing their struggles as well as hopes. Our deepest regret is the interruption in program delivery and the discontinuity it has created for our girls.

Queries can be sent to info@girlsincnnj.org until January 1st. For more information about Girls Inc. affiliates, you can contact Barbara Dowd at the National organization; bdowd@girls-inc.org.

Sincerely,
The Board of Directors Girls Inc. of Northern New Jersey
